Long and Short Trade Math: Entry, Exit, Fees, and What the Formula Misses

Understand the arithmetic of a hypothetical trade without confusing a calculation with a trading plan.

A long position benefits in simple arithmetic when the exit price is above entry. A short position benefits when the exit price is below entry. In both cases, units and costs matter.

Simple formulas

For a long position: (exit − entry) × units − total fees. For a short position: (entry − exit) × units − total fees. The formulas describe a hypothetical outcome after the prices and fees are entered.

Real costs can be larger

Spread, slippage, borrowing, funding, leverage, liquidity, platform charges, tax, and execution delays can change a real outcome. A fast market can move through a planned price before an order fills.

No signal is hiding inside the calculator

The trade outcome calculator does not use market data, rate an asset, suggest an entry, or predict a result. It is only a transparent arithmetic worksheet.
